Who We Are

Sea Lyons Aquatics is a family owned business which has been operating from the Burnie Aquatic Centre since 1982.

James and Jeanie Lyons founded the family friendly swim school with a personal ambition of creating the best facility for the community.

All our instructors are Austswim qualified who possess various skills, experience, and extensions to assist our diverse clientele.

Swimming is not only a skill for life, but an extremely important life long skill. We at Sea Lyons Aquatics wish to take you and your family on this journey.

What We Do

We teach a varied range of water safety skills and how to stay safe in the aquatic environment. We believe this is an integral part to Sea Lyons Swim School programs.

At Sea Lyons Swim School, we offer a wide variety of Learn to Swim classes, ranging from Wonder classes, aimed at infants to 6 months of age, through to Courage classes, designed for children 4 years of age. From the age of 5 years, students further advance their skills, stroke development and correction techniques.

Adult swim groups are being run on a Tuesday from 7am and Thursday morning from 7.30am. You are never too old to learn to swim is our motto here at Sea Lyons Swim School. The adult swim sessions cover stroke development, correction techniques and stamina building, along with a social coffee catch up after your session.

Our Learn to Swim programs primarily run between 3.30pm and 6.00pm Monday to Friday and on Saturday between 8.30am and 12 noon. Alternative times may be arranged.

Our Sea Lyons Swim School operates in conjunction with school terms. In addition, we also offer School Holiday Learn to Swim programs which run for a period of 10 days during the school breaks.

We are currently taking new enrolments for those interested in taking up the opportunity to participate in our Learn to Swim programs.

Swim and Survive

Swim and Survive is a comprehensive swimming and water safety initiative of Royal Life Saving that seeks to increase the swimming and water safety skills of all Australian children in order to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity.

Learn to swim, swimming lessons and infant aquatics are all terms commonly used across the aquatic industry for programs that seek to build swimming skills. Swim and Survive is all of these, but most importantly it ensures that the essential components of personal survival and water safety are provided, in addition to a process of developing strong and effective swimming technique.

Since its inception over 30 years ago, over 15 million Australian children have participated in the Swim and Survive program.

Wonder, Courage and Active have been chosen as the Swim and Survive program titles to reflect the hopes and aspirations of children and families as they embark on a lifetime of fun and safety in the water. Each program is structured into skill strands that ensure a balanced, comprehensive instructional approach to a child’s aquatic education.

Wonder

A water familiarisation program for parents and their children aged 6 to 36 months.

The program is a child-centred program which is taught with parent or carer and child together in the water. Parents are an integral part of their child’s aquatic education by providing guidance and support through activities that provide for the development of water familiarisation, exploration and water safety skills.

Wonder uses songs, games and activities to teach children a variety of skills including entries, floating, breathing and movement. Wonder has 3 awards that are arranged by age groups. Within each age group are two stages which allow for a stepping stone of progression, keeping the program challenging and rewarding.

Courage

A program that builds water confidence for preschool aged children between the ages of 3-5 years.

The program is fundamental to the development of basic foundation skills in swimming, survival and water safety, as is a positive attitude towards learning these essential skills.

Swim and Survive Courage guides children through fun and safe activities, gradually building upon their breathing, floating and movement skills; supporting and encouraging independence. The Courage program progresses from initial parental participation to children developing trust and learning through interacting independently with the instructor.

Courage has 5 awards for children to progress through as they build confidence and develop new skills.

Active

A swimming and water safety program for school aged children between the ages of 5-14 years.

The skills learnt in this program not only save lives, but provide a foundation for participation in a range of aquatic recreation, fitness and sporting activities.

Swim and Survive Active is a broad and balanced program teaching a range of skills and knowledge to develop swimming, water safety, survival and basic rescue skills. With a vibrant look, and an increased focus on stroke development, Active encourages children to have a healthy respect for the aquatic environment.

The Program has 3 developing awards and 7 core awards to progress through. The initial awards focus on development of foundation skills with the higher awards building on endurance.
